TEACHER SALARY INCREASES

UNDER BINDING ARBITRATION

By Judith Lohman, Chief Analyst

You asked for the statewide average percentage salary increases granted to teachers in binding arbitration awards in the past several years. You also asked if the increases include cost of living adjustments or other automatic increases.

Table 1 below shows the (1) average annual salary increases statewide under teacher binding arbitration awards issued from 1999 through February 2003 and (2) the number of salary awards contributing to the average for the particular year. The percentages given are those listed in the binding arbitration awards for overall salary increases, including cost of living adjustments. Since most awards cover multiple years, the table shows increases taking effect through 2005-06.

The awards cover teacher contracts in a total of 20 school districts.
